While Finnair isn’t the first carrier to introduce a hygiene amenity kit, as of tomorrow passengers will be able to enjoy this simple complimentary addition to their passenger experience. While other airlines have brought a variety of kits out, what makes Finnair stand out is the fact that this kit is sustainable, with a focus on utilising local brands to bring the product together.

The beautifully understated kit, housed in a paper envelope also acts as a waste container for used items ready for waste collection. It features a specially commissioned artwork piece by Finnish artist Reeta Ek, printed in Finland with sustainable Finnish forestry fibre.

Inside there are two sachets of “Kyrö Hand Desi” hand sanitiser (who also supply Finnair’s gin) and a surface wipe intended for customer to use on armrests, tray tables and other surfaces around them – although interesting because of a shortage of Isopropyl alcohol in Europe these couldn’t be created locally at the moment.

There is also an information leaflet communicating the carrier’s measures in maintaining a safe environment. While face masks are not part of the kit (the carrier does ask all passengers to bring their own supply) Finnair do have a limited number available onboard. The same masks are being used by our crew and these masks were also sourced and manufactured within Finland, reaffirming its sustainability and. support of local businesses.

“Whilst the primary objective of course was to provide a product that helps to reassure our customers of a safe journey with Finnair, this was an opportunity for us to experiment to really see what we can do with local and domestic supply chain. Sustainability is a real focus for Finnair and there is a lot of activity ongoing to reduce our environmental impact. I think this exercise has taught us a lot and for sure we will be looking closer to home as we renew our various products within the Finnair experience,” states David Kondo, Head of Product Design at Finnair.
