It looks like ANA and Japan Airlines are both working hard to improve their passenger experience. While ANA lunched the Room, JAL has also recently launched the upgraded cabin interior of their international Boeing 777-300ER aircraft fleet, extending tangerine’s “Infused Essence” design strategy that was developed for JAL’s newly acquired domestic A350-900(359) aircraft, which launched in June 2019.
The design might look familiar, and that’s because the hard product is still the same. And that’s no bad thing, especially in business class, with our favourite forward-facing Apex Suites taking centre stage. That said, the B777 was last renovated approximately seven years ago.
This retrofit is the second project to launch from tangerine’s ongoing design partnership with JAL. The brief was to create consistency between the cabin product of JAL’s new flagship, line-fit A350 domestic service and its existing international service of B777 aircraft. The new B777 has actually been flying for a little while now with passengers experiencing the new design since August between Tokyo Haneda and London Heathrow.
tangerine’s design strategy of ‘Infused Essence’ is echoed through all four classes of the cabin interior. While non-design centric consumers will find this cabin smart and modern, they might not at first appreciate the attention to detail. The London-based design company have managed to capture the traditional innovative spirit of Japan, while also delivering a contemporary travel experience. The B777 retrofit will certainly appeal to both local and international passengers.
Across all of the cabin classes, tangerine worked closely with Botany Weaving to create a bespoke textile design for all of the seats of JALs B777 retrofit. The seats in each class have thick, breathable patterned fabrics with variants of JAL red, blacks and greys dependant on the cabin class.
Bespoke pleated curtains that reference the traditional Japanese origami paper-folding techniques divide the cabin classes. Cabin walls, vestibules and toilets have been designed with dark black patterned finishes, reflecting the Japanese interior design tradition of utilising monochromatic surfaces for interior spaces to create a rich, layered environment.
Yuichi Ishihara, Creative Director & Head of Japan Business says: “Due to strict weight limitations for the retrofit, every detail down to the last thread had to be considered to achieve the right balance of cabin weight and desirability. We challenged ourselves to introduce the maximum benefit for the customer experience while judging the weight implications to the gram!”
Additionally, tangerine designed all of the bespoke lighting for the new cabin with over 10 bespoke themes. During a 3-day workshop with manufacturer Diehl, in Germany, Ishihara was able to guide the development of various lighting scenarios. In addition to UX-focused scenarios for welcome, taxi, take-off, mealtimes, sleep, wake-up and relaxation. In March and April, during the cherry blossom season, the cabin lights up in the Sakura theme, using delicate pinks and Spring greens to evoke the feel of the annually celebrated Japanese holiday.

While not much has changed in First Class, regular travellers will see a new textured dark grey laminate for front and back walls and soft-to-the-touch luxurious cut-pile in each FC suite.
In business class, the seats have a totally refreshed look with embossed fabric in two different colour variations: Inky-blue and grey for the centre seats. These are supported by new faux leather embossed antimacassars just like in First Class and textured dark grey laminate for front and back walls.
In Premium Economy, gone is the sea of red, and instead, a new bespoke dress cover with highly textured horizontal woven fabric, with dual colour of rich burgundy red and inky-blue. The seats, just like in economy also feature Faux leather embossed antimacassars.
